All about Reiki

Reiki energy flows through loving intention, connecting body, mind and spirit in a healing embrace.

How do we define Reiki ?

Reiki is a spiritual and therapeutic practice that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. It is based on the belief that there is a universal life energy (called "ki" or "chi") that flows through all living things and that, when this energy is out of balance, it can lead to health or well-being problems.

The term "Reiki" is made up of two Japanese words: "Rei", which means "universal energy", and "Ki", which means "life energy". Thus, Reiki roughly translates to “universal life energy.”

The practice of Reiki involves the transfer of energy through the hands of the practitioner, which is placed on or near the body of the recipient. This energy is believed to flow through the practitioner and into the recipient, restoring and balancing the recipient's life energy.

Principles of Reiki

  • Universal Energy: The belief in a universal energy that flows through all things.

  • Energy Balance: The idea that energy imbalances can contribute to health and well-being problems.

  • Energy Transfer: The transfer of energy through the practitioner's hands to restore balance and improve health.

  • Self Healing: Reiki is also taught as a self-healing technique, where individuals can learn to channel energy to balance their own energy system.

It is important to note that Reiki is not scientifically supported, and its effectiveness can be considered from a more spiritual or holistic perspective. Those looking to experiment with Reiki should do so with trained practitioners and keep in mind that it is not a substitute for conventional medical treatment. The practice of Reiki has been integrated into many cultures and wellness approaches as a way to complement health care.

7 Basic steps to practice Reiki

Preparation:
  • Find a quiet place without distractions.
  • Sit or lie down comfortably.

Centering and Relaxation:
  • Breathe deeply and relax.
  • Visualize a warm, positive light surrounding you.

Summoning Energy:

You can say a prayer or affirmation out loud or mentally to invoke Reiki energy.

For example: "I call upon the universal energy of Reiki to flow through me and provide healing and balance."

Hand Position:
  • Place your hands in a "Gassho" position (palms together) on your lap or near your heart to connect with Reiki energy.
  • Then, place your hands on different areas of the body to channel the energy, starting with the head.

Energy Channeling:
  • Imagine or feel Reiki energy flowing through your hands.
  • Hold your hands in each position for a few minutes, allowing the energy to flow.

Healing Intention:
  • Focus on the intention to provide healing and balance.
  • You can direct the energy to specific areas of the body or to emotional and mental aspects.

Closing:
  • When you feel the session is complete, thank the Reiki energy.
  • You can say a closing prayer or simply express gratitude.

It is important to mention that Reiki involves a transfer of energy that, according to the philosophy of Reiki, flows through the practitioner to the recipient. Regular practice, positive intention and respect are essential in Reiki.
